“A refuge located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, this project involves the implementation of self-sufficient energy systems that rely on the deformation of the building according to technical and climatic data (heating, lighting, etc.). The process of optimization drives the formal genesis. Designed as a reactive textile membrane, the flat and geometric surface evolves according to a parametric algorithm that associates each loop of the mesh with data (sunlight conditions), thereby enabling it to generate the maximum amount of energy. The use of photovoltaic cells ensures the exchange data between project, choice of components and caloric performance. The film-like mesh resembles a woven surface. Sensitive to the atmosphere, this skin constitutes a barrier or a wall but also a structure, or a “contexture.” Ecoscape breaks the traditional hierarchy between structure and cladding, revealing itself as an intelligent surface, an organic epidermis able to manage internal climatic conditions as well as the integration of the building into the landscape, alternating hollows and crests, peaks and valleys. Presented in 2005 with three other projects as part of the installation entitled Clocks_Clouds, in the Machines Atmosphériques exhibition at the FRAC Centre, Ecoscape illustrated the principle of “synchronic” emergence” (clocks) versus a “diachronic” system (clouds).”
